Wiprechtsburg Castle

The name Groitzsch derives from the Slavic word “grodisce,” meaning “fortified place.” The castle received its first documentary mention around 1073/74 through an exchange by Wiprecht von Groitzsch and is one of the few castles from the 11th and 12th centuries whose history is documented in written sources. Archaeological excavations revealed layers over six meters high, showing a continuous development of fortification and settlement methods from the 10th to the end of the 13th century in five phases. Notably, Wiprechtsburg, with its third construction phase in the last quarter of the 11th century, marks the transition from timber-and-earth constructions to mortar-bound stone buildings. A round chapel and a round tower are considered the oldest stone structures in Saxony and initiated the construction of numerous other sacred and secular stone buildings in the 12th century.

The Wiprechtsburg is situated on a spur of land on the northwestern outskirts of Groitzsch in the district of Leipzig, Saxony, Germany, at approximately 145 m above sea level. It lies on the eastern bank of the White Elster river and was strategically located along important medieval trade routes.

The castle ruin is currently accessible to the public. Visitors can explore the partially reconstructed round chapel and the stump of a round tower, both dating back to around 1080. The area is designed in an amphitheater style and features a vineyard, flowerbeds, and walking paths. The castle's lapidarium displays a collection of about 40 boundary stones and field markers from the region.
