Wohlenstein Castle

Wohlenstein Castle was built in 1295 by a collateral line of the Wohldenberger family, with the abbess of Gandersheim Abbey serving as the liege lord. In 1349, the Wohldenberger family sold the castle to the noble lords of Homburg. Just eight years later, in 1357, Bishop Heinrich III of Hildesheim acquired the complex. At the beginning of the 16th century, in 1519, Duke Erich I of Calenberg-Göttingen besieged the castle as part of the Hildesheim Diocesan Feud. He captured the castle on May 30, 1519, and completely destroyed it. After the feud, the castle and the Wohlenstein office passed to Duke Heinrich the Younger of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. The administration was subsequently moved to a newly built administrative building in Bilderlahe. The stones of the castle were reused for the construction of the Heber outpost and the farm buildings of the Bilderlahe domain.
