Wolfsburg Castle

The construction of the Wolfsburg is dated to the beginning of the 13th century, presumably under Count Palatine Ludwig the Kelheimer. Its first documentary mention occurred in 1255 as "Castrum Volfperg," simultaneously with the city of "Nova Civitas" (Neustadt). The castle served Albrecht von Lichtenstein as a fief and residence. After a temporary pledging in the early 14th century, the Electoral Palatinate was granted to the descendants of Rudolf I by the Treaty of Pavia. Until 1423, the Wolfsburg was the residence of the governors of the Palatine Electors and formed a defensive point.
