The Zinnberg castle ruin, once known as Czynnemburg, is a hilltop castle located on the western edge of the Zinnberg district, about two kilometers south of Penig.

History+

The construction of Zinnberg Castle is presumed to have taken place around 1170, primarily to secure the newly conquered Slavic territories. It developed into the seat of power for the Burgraves of Altenburg. The first documentary mention dates back to 1267, when a "Heinricus de Cinnenberg" is named as a ministerialis of the Altenburg Burgraves. In 1290, the complex is referred to as "castellanus in Zinnenberc" of the Margraves of Meissen.
