Zöch Castle
The castle ruin Zöch is located in the municipality of Altenberg bei Linz in the district of Urfahr-Umgebung in Upper Austria. The naming of the complex as "Zöch" dates from the 19th century. What the castle in Altenberg was originally called is not known.
There are two documented records of the castle. In 1245, Karolus Alkenperge is mentioned as a witness to a document concerning the enfeoffment of Gundacker III von Steyr und Steinbach with the lordship of Wildberg. In 1248, a Pertholdus de Altenberge is named. Conrad von Altenperch is listed around 1250 on a document from Wilhering Abbey. In 1364, Herman der Geyczesterer mentions "vnser Ansidel (and) der hof dacz dem Altenperg", then a fief of the Starhembergers. In 1377, a Charl der Geyczensterer owned the seat on the wasteland in the Edt district of the municipality of Altenberg. Zöch belonged to the lordship of Riedegg.
Zöch Castle Ruin Today+
The remains of the castle walls stand below Altenberg; presumably, the seat was surrounded by a pond. Even today, a pond is still preserved here; in the 1970s, the moat leading around the ruin was flooded, so that today no direct access to the masonry is possible.
The lowland castle is preserved up to the height of a first upper floor. The side walls are almost completely missing. In addition to the outer walls, an inner wall with beam holes is still present. Presumably, the building therefore had another floor. In the preserved part of a side wall, there is a smoothed corbel, on which a bay window presumably sat.
