Zöch Castle

The original name of the castle is unknown; the name “Zöch” only became established in the 19th century. Historical records first mention the castle in the 13th century. In 1245, a Karolus Alkenperge is named in a document attesting to the enfeoffment of Gundacker III of Steyr and Steinbach with the Wildberg lordship. A few years later, in 1248, a Pertholdus de Altenberge appears in documents. Around 1250, Conrad von Altenperch is listed in a document from Wilhering Abbey. In 1364, Herman der Geyczesterer is mentioned in connection with “vnser Ansidel (und) der hof dacz dem Altenperg,” a fief of the Starhembergs. Later, in 1377, Charl der Geyczensterer owned the seat on the Öde in the Edt district of Altenberg. Zöch Castle was once part of the Riedegg lordship.
