Zrin Castle

The first documented mention of Zrin dates back to the 13th century, when the castle was owned by the Babonić noble family. It later changed hands before becoming the ancestral seat of a branch of the Šubić family, who subsequently adopted the name Zrinski. Notable figures such as Nikola III Zrinski and his son Nikola Šubić Zrinski were born here. In the 16th century, specifically on October 20, 1577, the castle fell to the Ottomans during the Croatian-Turkish Wars. It was not until 1718 that the Habsburg army succeeded in recapturing the area. A devastating fire in the early 19th century led to the castle's final abandonment, and it has been a ruin ever since. In recent times, occasional conservation work has been carried out.

The castle ruin of Zrin is situated at an elevation of approximately 311 meters above sea level in the eponymous village of Zrin, within the Sisak-Moslavina County in the region of Continental Croatia.
