Burschenschaftsdenkmal

The idea for a monument to the fallen Burschenschafter emerged after the establishment of the German Empire in 1871. Between 1889 and 1890, the plan to choose Eisenach as the location became more concrete. A committee founded in Berlin in 1894, later moved to Eisenach and transformed into the “Burschenschaftsdenkmalsverein,” expanded the original concept: the monument was to be dedicated to all men who contributed to German unification. The foundation stone was laid on June 8, 1897, on the Wartenberg. Due to the construction of the Eisenach Bismarck Tower at this site, the heirs of the brick manufacturer Johann Georg Bornemann generously provided a plot of land on the Göpelskuppe.
