Caernarfon Castle

The construction of Caernarfon Castle began after Edward's second campaign in 1282/83 and was finally completed in 1327. The complex was designed as the new seat of government for North Wales, underscoring its significance. In 1284, Edward's son, the future Edward II, was born here and proclaimed "Prince of Wales." This made the castle a centuries-old symbol of English rule over Wales. Although it was plundered by the Welsh in 1294, it successfully withstood two sieges by Owain Glyndŵr between 1401 and 1404. During the English Civil War (1642–1649), the castle changed hands multiple times before finally falling to the Parliamentarians. In the Victorian era and beyond, the castle underwent extensive restoration. In 1911 and most recently in 1969, ceremonial investitures of the title "Prince of Wales" to the respective heir to the throne took place in the castle courtyard.
