Caerphilly Castle

The castle was built between 1268 and 1271 by Gilbert "the Red" de Clare, the third Earl of Gloucester. The reason was a dispute with the Welsh prince Llywelyn ap Gruffydd. The strategically designed artificial lakes served not only as a moat but also to hinder attackers and prevent tunneling during sieges. Unlike many other Welsh castles, Caerphilly Castle was not built by the English King Edward I. After the end of the conflicts between Llywelyn and Edward I, the castle lost its military significance. It was only occasionally used as a base for the de Clares and later Hugh le Despenser. By the end of the 14th century, the de Clares moved to a more comfortable residence, and the castle stood empty. In 1403, it was captured by Owain Glyndŵr's troops and two years later, along with French allies, reoccupied. In the 15th century, the castle changed hands several times and was renovated by figures such as Richard de Beauchamp and Jasper Tudor. Nevertheless, the complex gradually fell into disrepair. During the English Civil War (1642–1648), the southeast tower was damaged, leading to its current tilt. From the late 18th century, the Marchioness of Bute and her descendants began extensive preservation work. Since 1950, the castle has been in state ownership and is being restored and maintained by Cadw (Welsh Historic Monuments).

The ruin of Caerphilly Castle is located in the town of Caerphilly, in the district of Cardiff (Caerdydd) in Wales, United Kingdom, at an elevation of approximately 86 m above sea level.

The ruin is now accessible to visitors and can be toured. Thanks to ongoing restoration work, it is in excellent condition.
