Carew Castle

The Castle can be visited

Carew Castle is a castle ruin in Wales, distinguished by its architectural evolution from a medieval fortress to a Tudor residence.

History+

The origins of Carew Castle date back to the early 12th century, when Gerald de Windsor erected a keep on this site around 1100. He had been appointed castellan of Pembroke Castle by Arnulf of Montgomery and acquired the manor of Carew through his marriage to the Princess of Deheubarth. Gerald replaced an existing fort with his own castle, with the initial outer walls made of wood and only the keep constructed of stone. This stone tower remained intact during subsequent alterations. The castle fell to the Crown during the Tudor period. In 1558, John Perrot acquired the estate and carried out structural modifications. Carew Castle was destroyed by Parliamentarians at the end of the English Civil War.
