The ruin of Carrigaholt Castle stands at the mouth of the Shannon in County Clare, Ireland.

History+

The origins of Carrigaholt Castle date back to around 1480, when the McMahon family commissioned its construction. In September 1588, Teige Caech occupied the castle while seven ships of the Spanish Armada anchored in Carrigaholt Bay. Later, after a four-day siege, the castle fell to Donagh O'Brien, the fourth Earl of Thomond, before ownership passed to Donal O'Brien.

The ruin is located in Carrigaholt, a town in County Clare (An Clár) in the province of Munster (An Mhumhain) in Ireland. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 10 meters above sea level directly at the mouth of the Shannon.
