Castel Fahlburg
Castel Fahlburg, a prominent manor house in Prissian, is perched above the Etsch Valley in the Tisner Mittelgebirge. Originally built as a defensive castle in the 13th century, it was transformed into an elegant Renaissance residence in the early 17th century and today stands as an impressive example of the fusion of medieval defensive architecture and stately residential culture.
History+
The origins of Castel Fahlburg date back to the 13th century when it was constructed as a purely defensive fortress. Of this original complex, only the residential tower remains today. A pivotal moment in the castle's history occurred in 1597 when Jakob Andrä von Brandis acquired the property. He initiated a comprehensive transformation: starting in 1615, he had a magnificent Renaissance manor built on parts of the existing castle walls, fundamentally changing the character of the estate. Castel Fahlburg served its owners not only as a summer residence but also as a court seat. It was here that the significant “History of the Provincial Governors of Tyrol” was written, a work that marks the beginning of Tyrolean historiography. The estate remains in the possession of the Count Brandis family to this day and has retained its historical charm.
