Castel Nuovo
The Castel Nuovo, often referred to as Maschio Angioino, is an imposing castle in Naples, Italy, and one of the city's most prominent structures. Since its construction in the late 13th century, it has served as both a fortress and a royal residence, undergoing multiple transformations over the centuries.
History+
The history of Castel Nuovo began in 1279 under Charles I of Anjou, who, after moving the capital of the Kingdom of Naples from Palermo to Naples, commissioned a new residence near the sea. Construction, supervised by architect Pierre de Chaule, lasted three years. Following an uninhabited period during the Sicilian Vespers, the castle was expanded under Charles II and Robert the Wise from 1309, significantly contributing to Naples' urban development. Castel Nuovo suffered severe damage in 1347 by the army of Louis I of Hungary, necessitating extensive restoration work under Queen Joanna I. Under Aragonese rule, starting with Alfonso V of Aragon in 1442, the fortress was extensively modernized to meet changing military challenges. A prominent triumphal arch at the main gate, designed by Francesco Laurana, was erected to celebrate Alfonso's arrival in Naples and was completed by 1464 at the latest. The Sala dei Baroni, a significant secular hall, served as the meeting place for the Campania Regional Parliament until 2006.
