Castell d’Alaró

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Castell d’Alaró is the impressive ruin of a rock castle, rising on a mountain approximately 690 meters high on Mallorca. Located in the municipality of Alaró on the Balearic Islands in Spain, the complex offers not only historical insights but also remarkable views over the landscape.

History+

The origins of the fortification on the mountain can be traced back to the Bronze Age. Later, the Romans used the strategically favorable location to secure the surrounding valleys. Military records confirm the existence of a fortress as early as 902, when the Saracens conquered Mallorca and the castle resisted for eight years. After the end of Moorish rule by King James I in 1229, the castle was handed over to the Knights Templar for supervision in 1231. In 1285, Castell d’Alaró was attacked again, this time by King Alfonso III of Aragon, who led a punitive expedition against his uncle James II of Mallorca. The definitive collapse of the Kingdom of Mallorca by Peter IV of Aragon in 1349 also led to the fall of Castell d’Alaró. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the castle was gradually abandoned, but served as a quarantine station during the plague in 1564. A military garrison was present until 1741, after which the site was used exclusively for religious purposes, following the construction of a chapel in 1622.
