Castell de Capdepera

The origins of the Castell date back to the 14th century when it was built as a fortified village. King James II of Mallorca planned a fortified town around the older Torre d’en Miquel Nunis in 1300 to protect the scattered population and control the sea routes to Menorca. Although many residents were hesitant to abandon their rural settlements, a smaller, fortified complex was built in the style of Gothic military architecture. The curtain wall, initially without towers, enclosed a triangular area. Later, defensive towers were added to strengthen its defenses. The Castell played a special role as early as 1231 when King James I of Aragon used a ruse here to persuade the Muslim island of Menorca to sign the Treaty of Capdepera. In the 17th and 18th centuries, settlement increasingly shifted to the foot of the Castell, and its military importance declined. After the military withdrew in 1854, the complex was auctioned off and partially fell into disrepair before restoration work began in the late 19th century.

Capdepera Castle is situated on a hill approximately 134 meters above sea level in the municipality of Capdepera in northeastern Mallorca, one of the Balearic Islands in Spain.

Today, the fortress is accessible to visitors and offers insights into its history and architecture. Within its walls, visitors can explore the Església de Nostra Senyora de l’Esperança church, a cistern, and the restored Governor's House, which now houses a museum. Only a few traces of the former residential houses of the fortified village remain.
