Castell de Santa Àgueda

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Castell de Santa Àgueda is a significant castle ruin on the Spanish Balearic island of Menorca. It is perched on one of the island's highest points and was once one of Menorca's most important Muslim fortresses, playing a crucial role in the island's history.

History+

The origins of Castell de Santa Àgueda date back a long time. Archaeological finds suggest that initial constructions from the Bronze Age (Talaiotic period) served as the basis for later walls. Roman pottery and coins also confirm a Roman settlement at this location. The oldest surviving parts of the current castle complex, two round towers, date from the 10th and 11th centuries and display typical Moorish architecture. In 1287, Castell de Santa Àgueda served as the last bastion of resistance against the conquest by King Alfonso III. A later religious building, known as the Chapel of Santa Àgueda, was erected at the request of Leonor de Portugal and became a pilgrimage site for the patron saint of married women and nursing mothers.

Location+

The castle ruin is located in the municipality of Ferreries on Menorca, an island in the Spanish autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. It stands at an elevation of approximately 255 meters above sea level.
