History+
The origins of Castello del Buonconsiglio date back to the 12th century, when the oldest parts of the bishop's castle were built around the present-day Mastio Tower. From the 13th to the 15th century, the Castelvecchio, the oldest residence of the Prince-Bishops, was expanded. The Eagle Tower is famous for its cycle of months frescoes from 1397. Following an uprising in 1407 and the expulsion of Prince-Bishop Georg von Lichtenstein, the castle was expanded under Alexander of Masovia not only for defense but also as a coercive fortress. Albrecht Dürer visited the castle in 1495. Under Prince-Bishop Bernhard von Cles, the Castello underwent a significant expansion in the 16th century, becoming the Renaissance palace Magno Palazzo, whose rooms were splendidly decorated by artists such as Dosso Dossi and Girolamo Romanino. From 1796, after its occupation by French troops, the castle was converted into a barracks and served as a military site for the Habsburg Empire for over a hundred years. During World War I, Italian irredentists were imprisoned and executed here. After the war, the castle fell to Italy and was handed over to the Autonomous Province of Trento in 1974.
