Castello di Conegliano

The earliest records of the fortress date back to the 12th century. Reconstructions of the original structure and its evolution can only be made based on pictorial evidence: in fact, of the original castle complex, only the Bell Tower, part of the ancient cathedral, and part of the city walls survive today.

The castle houses the Civic Museum of Conegliano, which has several sections, divided by floor: the art gallery on the ground floor, the largest room, houses paintings of great value, as evidenced by the names of Giambattista Pittoni ("St. Francis of Paola", 1750), Palma il Giovane, and Pordenone; on the upper floors there are Roman artifacts found in the Conegliano area and other objects of historical interest; the top floor of the tower is dedicated to personalities linked to Conegliano. Inside there is a model, made by Ennio Tiveron from Treviso, on a 1/72 scale of the castle at the time of the Serenissima. At the end of the visit, one can enjoy the panorama of the city and the entire surrounding area: the Venetian plain up to the Venice lagoon, a good part of the Friulian plain, the morainic hills of Treviso, and the Prealps.
