Castello di San Giusto

The site's origins date back to a prehistoric settlement around 2000 BC. In Roman times, it was an administrative and religious center. In 1368, during a brief occupation of Trieste, the Venetians erected initial fortifications, which were soon destroyed. The construction of the current Castello di San Giusto began in 1471 under Emperor Frederick III, who thereby underscored his claim to the city. The first construction phase included the portico, guardrooms, and the San Giorgio Chapel. After another brief Venetian rule starting in 1508, the circular Bastione Veneto was begun and completed after the Austrians' return in 1509. Between 1553 and 1561, the angular Bastione Lalio was built, named after the city captain Giovanni de Hoyos or master builder Domenico dell'Allio, which took into account the changed requirements due to the introduction of gunpowder. The fortress was finally completed between 1615 and 1630 with the Bastione Pomis by Giovanni Pietro de Pomis. From 1471 until the late 18th century, the castle served as the residence of the imperial governor and later as a barracks. Despite its size, it played a minor military role and was only involved in combat in 1813 and 1945. Since the 1930s, the castle has been owned by the Municipality of Trieste.

The castle is situated on the eponymous San Giusto hill in Trieste, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, Italy, at an elevation of approximately 67 meters above sea level.

Today, the Castello di San Giusto is open to visitors. It houses a castle and arms museum and serves as a venue for exhibitions, theater performances, and concerts. The Lapidario Tergestino in the Lalio Bastion displays ancient Roman sculptures and architectural fragments.
