Castello di Sasso Corbaro (Castle) (Bellinzona)

The Castello di Sasso Corbaro stands as an impressive castle on a rocky outcrop in Bellinzona, the capital of the Swiss canton of Ticino. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage of the Castles of Bellinzona, it is distinguished by its exposed location and complete separation from the other fortifications.
History+
As early as around 1400, a defensive tower is believed to have existed on the Sasso Corbaro hill. After the Duchy of Milan conquered Bellinzona from the Confederates in 1422, Milanese experts recognized the strategic importance of the site and urged its fortification. Construction began in 1479, and a small garrison was stationed there in the same year. Completion occurred in 1482; in times of peace, the castle also served as a prison. Following Bellinzona's submission to the Confederates in 1500 and the confirmation of the new power relations by the Peace of Arona in 1503, the castle was assigned to the canton of Nidwalden in 1506. Nidwalden stationed a small garrison but gradually allowed the structure to fall into disrepair. In 1803, the Castello became the property of the newly founded canton of Ticino. Extensive restoration work to preserve the monument took place in 1963/64 and from 1998 to 2006.
Location+
The castle is located at an altitude of approximately 453 meters above sea level in Bellinzona, in the district of Bellinzona, Canton Ticino, Switzerland.

Today, the Castello di Sasso Corbaro houses a museum. Visitors can explore the square towers and the battlements with machicolations and swallowtail merlons. Temporary exhibitions are displayed on the upper floor of the northeastern main tower, and since 1989, the Sala Emma Poglia, a historically valuable 17th-century lord's hall, can be viewed there.
