In Nerola, a municipality in the Province of Rome in the Lazio region, Italy, stands the Castello Orsini, a medieval fortress. The castle complex is at an elevation of approximately 443 meters above sea level.
History+
The origins of the castle complex likely date back to the 10th century. The first documented mention confirms that Castello Orsini was in the possession of the Orsini family by 1235 at the latest. During that century, the castle acquired its form with crenellated walls, a moat, and towers. In 1728, the property changed hands and was sold to Cornelia Barberini and Giulio Cesare Colonna. The castle served as a refuge for the Garibaldini during their attack on Rome in 1867.
