Castello Scaligero
The Castello Scaligero in Sirmione is a moated castle on Lake Garda in Lombardy, Italy. With its swallowtail battlements and the harbor basin built directly into the water, it is an example of medieval defensive architecture and shapes the townscape of Sirmione.
History+
The castle's origins date back to the 13th century, when the Scaligers, a family from Verona, began its construction starting in 1259. Built on the foundations of an older Roman fort, a defensive complex emerged, serving for defense and as a demonstration of Scaliger power. It protected the Lake Garda fleet's harbor and controlled access to the town of Sirmione.

The castle is accessible to visitors. A tour along the battlements and through the corner towers allows discovery of the defense system with its walls, stairs, and drawbridges. From here, one can see Sirmione's Scaliger harbor.
