Castillo de Amer

As early as 1585, the necessity of a defensive tower on Punta de n’Amer was recognized to protect the coasts from pirate attacks. Following a severe attack in 1611, the Council of Manacor decided in 1617 to build it, but due to lack of funds, construction was initially not carried out. Construction of the Castell only began in 1693, after another raid in 1688 highlighted the urgency, and the General Council of Mallorca pledged its support. Completed in 1696, the tower served for defense and as an observation post within Mallorca's network of fortifications. With diminishing threats in the 19th century, the tower was privatized. During the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), the Nationalists used the Castell as a communications and supply depot.

The Castillo de Amer fortress is situated on the Punta de n’Amer peninsula, in the municipality of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar on Mallorca, one of Spain's Balearic Islands. It stands at an elevation of approximately 26 meters above sea level.

Visitors can explore the fortress today. The tower was restored in 1969 and houses display cases with exhibits on its history. A moat surrounds the fortification, which is accessible via a drawbridge. Adjacent to the Castell is an outbuilding that now hosts a restaurant.
