Castillo de Despeñaperros

In the historic center of Cartagena in the Spanish region of Murcia, the Castillo de Despeñaperros, also known as Castillo de San José, is an 18th-century fortress.

The construction of the Castillo de Despeñaperros took place in the 18th century. On August 7, 1997, the site was officially recognized as a cultural asset. The fortress is characterized by its masonry walls, which are largely flat. Internally, the complex is divided into two sections: a lower one that included rooms for the garrison and a water reservoir, and an upper area that once housed cannons, though their gun emplacements have since been lost.
