Castillo de Santueri

After 123 BC, a fortification existed at this location. After the conquest of Mallorca by the Emirate of Córdoba around 902 AD, the mountaintop was secured with a fortress. During the Reconquista of Mallorca by James I of Aragon starting in 1229, the fortress garrison resisted for a year before the complex fell and was almost completely razed. In the 14th century, the Spanish Crown built a new fortress on the remains of the earlier cave castle, which served to protect against pirate attacks. From the 18th century onwards, the complex began to decay.
