Castle Coole
Castle Coole is an impressive late 18th-century mansion, picturesquely situated in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland. It once served as a magnificent summer residence and captivates with its classical architecture amidst an unspoiled landscape.
History+
The origins of the estate date back to 1656, when Belfast merchant John Corry acquired the land. Between 1789 and 1798, the current mansion was built for Armar Lowry-Corry, the first Earl Belmore. He was a wealthy heir to approximately 70,000 hectares of land in Ireland and a Member of Parliament for County Tyrone in the Irish Parliament. Construction costs amounted to 57,000 pounds, which would be equivalent to about 20 million pounds today. The site on the 1200-hectare estate in Fermanagh was chosen for its rural beauty. In 1951, the mansion became the property of the National Trust when the 7th Earl Belmore sold it.
