Castle Cornet

The Fortress can be visited

Castle Cornet is a historic fortress rising on a small island off the coast of Saint Peter Port, Guernsey. Originally a tidal island, it is now connected to the mainland by a pier and shapes the image of the harbor.

History+

The origins of the fortification date back to the 13th century, with initial structures built between 1206 and 1256, a direct consequence of the division of the Duchy of Normandy in 1204. In 1339, the fortress endured a French siege, which concluded with its capture and the massacre of the English garrison. Extensive reinforcements were carried out between 1545 and 1548. Until 1672, Castle Cornet served as the residence of the Governor of Guernsey, until a lightning strike destroyed the keep. After the Napoleonic Wars, in 1859, the island was connected to the mainland by a breakwater. During World War II, the complex was occupied by German troops. In 1945, the Crown gifted the fortress and the island to the people of Guernsey.

Location+

Castle Cornet is located in Saint Peter Port on the island of Guernsey, a Crown Dependency of the United Kingdom, at an elevation of approximately 7 meters above sea level.
