History+

The origins of Castle Fraser trace back to an older tower around 1400, on whose foundations the current building was erected. Michael Fraser began construction of the castle in 1575, which his son Andrew, the 1st Lord Fraser, completed in 1636. It is believed that master masons John Bell, Thomas Leiper, and James Leiper were involved in its construction. In the late 18th century, the castle underwent modernization under the supervision of Elyza Fraser, the wife of the then Lord, with a new entrance and sash windows added. She also redesigned the surrounding castle park. Between 1820 and 1850, the interiors were renovated under Charles Fraser and architects John Smith and William Burn.
