Castle Howard

To be privately owned

In Welburn, North Yorkshire, England, Castle Howard stands, a stately home considered one of the country's first and most distinctive Baroque buildings. Its architecture is strongly influenced by Continental European Baroque.

History+

Planning for Castle Howard began in 1699, with the main construction largely completed by 1712. The architect John Vanbrugh, who had little experience at the time, designed the stately home. Construction management was primarily overseen by Nicholas Hawksmoor. The west wing of the building was only finished in 1759, long after Vanbrugh's death. With its richly decorated facades, columns, and statues, Castle Howard set new standards in English architecture. By 1709, large parts of the stately home were habitable.
