Catedral de Santa María

After the reconquest of Mallorca from Moorish rule, King Jaume I laid the foundation stone for the cathedral in 1230 on the site of a former mosque. However, the actual construction only began in 1306 under his son Jaume II, starting from the main apse. The cathedral was also intended as a burial place for the Mallorcan royal family, and indeed Jaume II and III are buried here. The nave was completed in 1587 and the main portal consecrated in 1601. Work on the main facade stretched from 1852 into the early 20th century. Over the centuries, various architectural styles, from Gothic to Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque, and Classicism, shaped the cathedral's appearance. The famous architect Antoni Gaudí also left his mark in the early 20th century through restoration and decoration work in the Catalan Modernisme style.

The Catedral de Santa María is located in Palma de Mallorca, on the island of Mallorca, which belongs to the Spanish Balearic Islands. It stands at an elevation of approximately 41 meters above sea level.

The cathedral is now accessible to visitors and can be toured. Since 1932, it has also housed a museum in two chapter houses and on the ground floor of the bell tower. A special highlight is the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, redesigned by Mallorcan artist Miquel Barceló, which includes his work on the miraculous multiplication of bread and fish.
