Cawdor Castle

The Castle can be visited

Northeast of Inverness in the Scottish Highlands, Cawdor Castle is known for its connection to the legend of Shakespeare's Macbeth and its well-preserved interior furnishings.

History+

The origins of Cawdor Castle date back to 1380, when William, the Thane of Cawdor, commissioned the construction of a keep. It was not until 1638 that sources detail restoration work on the tower and the construction of the old drawing-room and the north wing. The castle remained largely undamaged during the Civil War and Oliver Cromwell's campaigns, being spared from quartering soldiers, which contributed to the preservation of its interior. In 1684, it was converted into a residence.
