In the canton of Vaud, Switzerland, Château Allaman is a castle with origins dating back to the 11th century. It is known for its role as a sanctuary for political refugees and as the founding site of an early peace organization.

History+

The beginnings of Château Allaman can be traced to the 11th century. The current castle was built in 1253 under the direction of the Count of Vaud. The estate experienced a period under the Genevan philanthropist Jean-Jacques de Sellon, who owned it until 1839. He provided refuge to political exiles, including Joseph Bonaparte, Joséphine de Beauharnais, Voltaire, Franz Liszt, and George Sand.
