In the northeastern corner of the old town of Avenches stands Château Avenches. Originally built as a fortress in the 13th century, it underwent renovation in the 16th century and now stands as a Renaissance castle.

History+

The origins of Château Avenches date back to the 13th century when it was constructed as a fortress. Initially, it served as the residence of the castellan. From 1536 onwards, following the Bernese conquest of Vaud, it became the seat of the bailiff appointed by Bern. Between 1565 and 1568, a transformation took place, converting the structure into a Renaissance castle, largely preserved as it is today.
