Château Bayard

To be privately owned

Château Bayard, a historic castle in Pontcharra, France, is known as the birthplace and home of the knight Pierre Terrail, the "knight without fear and without reproach."

History+

The origins of Château Bayard date back to 1404, when Pierre Terrail, the great-grandfather of the knight, began constructing a fortified manor house. Although initially just a strong house, 19th-century illustrations show a residence with four round towers and three floors. His son, Pierre II Terrail, later adopted the title "Lord of Bayard," officially elevating the estate to a castle. After his death in 1465 at the Battle of Montlhéry, the castle passed to his son Aymon, who also dedicated his life to serving the French king. Finally, Pierre III Terrail, Knight Bayard, inherited the castle. He spent his childhood here and returned repeatedly, especially during his time as Lieutenant-General of the Dauphiné. After the knight's death, the castle changed hands multiple times, including to the d’Avançon and Simiane families. In 1559, it was sold by Françoise Copier, the knight's niece.
