The castle, situated on a hill above the Mentue, dates back to the 12th century in its core, but was later rebuilt and restored several times; in 1635, a small watchtower was added. Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, made the castle his quarters before he set off for the Battle of Murten in early June 1476. The keep, which had fallen into disrepair over time, collapsed in 1890 and was subsequently removed. A comprehensive restoration was carried out in 1972. Today, the castle is privately owned and not accessible to the public; at the same time, it is the seat of the Jonas Foundation.
