The Château de Carrouge+

The Château de Carrouge, with its adjacent buildings, was rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries. In its garden stands a medieval watchtower.

History+

From the Middle Ages to the 17th Century

The first mention of the Carrouge estate dates back to 1162. At that time, the property belonged to the noble family of Carrouge, who were vassals of the Bishop of Lausanne. The family died out in the 14th century, and the estate changed hands several times.

In the 15th century, a fortified house was built on the site of the current château. This house was destroyed during the Burgundian Wars in 1476.

In the 16th century, a new manor house was built, which was then expanded and renovated in the 17th century.

The 18th and 19th Centuries: Reconstruction and Expansion

In the 18th century, the château was extensively rebuilt and expanded by the new owners, the noble family of Diesbach. The current main building dates from this period.

In the 19th century, the château was further expanded and renovated. The adjacent buildings, including the orangery and the stables, were also built during this time.

The 20th Century to Today

In the 20th century, the Château de Carrouge remained in private ownership. It was extensively renovated in the 1970s and is now used for cultural events and private functions.

Architecture+

The Château de Carrouge is a stately building in classical style. The main building has three floors and is flanked by two wings. The facade is adorned with pilasters and cornices.

The interior of the château is richly decorated with stucco, frescoes, and valuable furniture. The most impressive rooms include the grand salon, the dining room, and the library.

The Garden+

The château's garden is a French-style park with geometrically arranged flowerbeds, fountains, and sculptures. In the garden, there is also a medieval watchtower, which is the oldest part of the estate.

The garden is open to the public during certain hours and offers a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape.
