Château comtal de Rochefort

The origins of the complex date back to the 11th century, with the first documented mention in 1155. It was initially owned by the Montaigu family, then passed to the Duras family in 1147 and the Walcourt family in 1187. A member of this family founded the Trappist monastery of Notre-Dame de Saint-Rémy in 1230. In the 15th century, the castle came into the possession of the von der Mark family through marriage. Following conflicts with Philip the Good, the castle was besieged and heavily damaged in 1445. Elevated to a county in 1494, the property passed to the Stolberg family in 1544 and to the Löwenstein-Wertheim family in 1574. During the war between France and Spain, the castle was captured by Spanish troops in 1651. From 1737, it was again owned by the Stolberg family, who transformed the medieval castle into a stately residence. Confiscated by the French state at the end of the 18th century and sold in 1811, the financial ruin of the new owner led to the castle being used as a quarry. Since 1966, the remains have been listed as a historical monument, and extensive excavations have taken place since 1976.

The castle ruin is accessible to visitors and can be explored. Individual wall remnants, including a central risalit and a floor of a round tower, are still preserved and offer an impression of its former splendor.
