The Château d'Ainay-le-Vieil is a castle complex in the French region of Centre-Val de Loire. Located in the Cher department, near the municipality of Ainay-le-Vieil, this fortification is characterized by its location on a plain, which made natural defense impossible and therefore required a moat.

History+

The origins of Château d'Ainay-le-Vieil likely trace back to a fortified Gallo-Roman villa. In the 12th century, the castle bailiwick belonged to the Bourbons before passing to the Sully family in the mid-13th century. Jean de Sully initiated the construction of the current complex around 1330/1340. By the end of the 14th century, the estate came into the possession of the Culan family. In 1443, Jacques Cœur, King Charles VII's finance minister, acquired the castle but sold it in 1467 to Charles de Chevenon, Lord of Bigny.
