Château d'Airvault

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Château d'Airvault, a castle ruin, is situated in the French commune of Airvault in the Deux-Sèvres department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It once shaped the townscape and formed a strategically important part of the town's medieval defense system.

History+

The castle's origins lie on an earlier castrum. In 1207, it was besieged and conquered by Philip II of France. An event was the reception of Charles IX and the young Prince of Navarre, the future King Henri IV, by Jean Ysoré, Baron d’Airvault, on September 22, 1565.
