The Château d'Apcher is a castle ruin in the French region of Occitanie, in the Lozère department, near the commune of Prunières. This fortress was once the ancestral seat of the Marquise d'Apchier.

History+

The origins of the Château d'Apcher date back to the 11th century, with further construction phases following in the 12th and 14th centuries. It served as the ancestral seat of the Marquise d'Apchier, one of the barons of Gévaudan. The first documented mention of the castle dates to 1180, when Garin de Châteauneuf, Lord of Apcher, paid homage to the Bishop of Mende. Garin had married Alix d'Apchier, thus continuing the legacy of the original Apchier family.
