Château d'Apremont
The Château d'Apremont, often also referred to as Arthel Castle, is an impressive 16th-century edifice located in the heart of France's Burgundy region. It was built on a rocky outcrop near the village church of Arthel and underwent extensive remodelling in the 18th century, giving it its current appearance.
History+
The castle's origins date back to the 13th century, when a fortress stood on this site, belonging to the Bishops of Nevers. In 1378, the estate passed to Guillaume de Lamoignon. Later, in the second half of the 15th century, it was divided between Jean de Chabannes and Philibert de Boutillat. Imbert de Paris, a nobleman at the court of Henry III, had the two prominent towers of the north facade built in 1584. The castle largely acquired its current form through François Guynet, who had it rebuilt in 1722. The Fournier de Quincy family acquired the castle in 1754 and expanded it in the 19th century with square pavilions on the east and west sides.
