Château d'Arques

The Castle can be visited

The Château d'Arques, a medieval castle complex, is in the French region of Occitania. Although located in the region of Cathar castles, it stands out due to its later construction period and is not directly one of the Cathar fortifications.

History+

The history of Arques dates back to the 11th century, when the site belonged to the Abbey of Sainte-Marie de Lagrasse. Later, it fell to the Seigneurs de Termes, vassals of the Viscounts of Carcassonne. A fortified settlement was documented in 1154. In 1211 or 1217, the then-fortified village was burned down by Simon de Montfort.
