Château d'Aubenas

The Castle can be visited

In the French region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the Château d'Aubenas stands as a former castle complex above the city of Aubenas. Originally a medieval fortress, it evolved into a structure.

History+

The origins of the Château d'Aubenas date back to the 11th century, with the keep attributed to this early period. The complex, once completely surrounded by a moat, was rebuilt and expanded multiple times. The original core castle developed into a fortress, whose round towers and battlements are almost entirely equipped with machicolations. These structural changes contributed to the Château d'Aubenas acquiring its current form and being classified as a Monument historique in 1943.
