History+

The first parts of the castle were built around the year 1007 under the rule of Alard d'Esnes. After the male line of the Esnes family ended in 1105, the estate passed through marriage to the Landas family, who subsequently adopted the name Landas d'Esnes. Later, around 1260, the castle changed hands again when the heiress Alix de Beauvoir brought it into her marriage with Alard de Croisille. The lords of Esnes were important vassals of the Counts of Hainaut and participated in various conflicts. During the Hundred Years' War, Jean I of Esnes switched sides and fell in the Battle of Poitiers in 1356. In later centuries, after the French Revolution, the castle served as an agricultural estate and even as a German military prison for Russian prisoners of war during World War I.
