Château d'Étampes

The remains of the Castle can be visited

In the French city of Étampes, the Château d'Étampes, a former royal fortress, rises on a plateau in the northwest. Of the complex, only the ruin of the keep, known as the Tour de Guinette, remains today.

History+

The origins of the castle date back to the time of King Robert II (996–1031), who ordered the construction of an initial fortress. The keep visible today was built between 1130 and 1150, and by the end of the 12th century, the outer curtain walls were added. Queen Ingeborg was imprisoned in the château between 1201 and 1213.
