In Chauvigny, a commune in the French department of Vienne in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, stands the Château d'Harcourt, a castle ruin at an elevation of approximately 97 meters above sea level. This complex is an example of medieval defensive architecture.

History+

The origins of the Château d'Harcourt date back to the 13th century, when Jean II. d'Harcourt, a member of the Norman d'Harcourt family and Viscount of Châtellerault by marriage, had the castle built. It presumably arose on the foundations of an older complex, directly adjacent to the existing episcopal castle. The Château remained in the possession of the d'Harcourt family for about 200 years before being transferred in 1447 to the Bishops of Poitiers, who were also Barons of Chauvigny. It is considered one of the best-preserved castle complexes in the upper town of Chauvigny.
