Château d'Issan

The history of the land where Château d'Issan stands dates back to the 14th century, when it was known as Teoban. Reportedly, wines from Teobon were already served at the wedding of Henry Plantagenet and Eleanor of Aquitaine in 1152. In the 15th century, the then Château Teobon was a fortified complex that played a role during the Anglo-French conflicts and was abandoned by English soldiers in 1453. Through the Noalhan and Meyrac families, the property passed in 1507 to Isabeau de Meyrac, who married Giron de Ségur, bringing the estate into the possession of the de Ségur family. Through further marriages, the estate changed hands in the early 16th century to the de Salignac family, and later to Mademoiselle La Ferrière and Marguerite de Lalanne. Marguerite married Sarran François d'Essenault, whose descendant Pierre d'Essenault built the present-day castle. The name Issan originated from a corruption of the Essenault family name. In the 18th century, the quality of Château d'Issan wines was already appreciated by figures such as Thomas Jefferson. After several changes of ownership, including Justin Duluc, who enhanced wine quality, the estate was officially classified as a Troisième Grand Cru Classé in 1855. From 1866, Gustave Roy invested significantly in the winery, built a new cellar, and focused on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. After the challenges of the phylloxera epidemic and the World Wars, Emmanuel Cruse acquired the property in 1945 and restored it to its current splendor.

Château d'Issan is located in Cantenac in the French department of Gironde, in the Aquitaine region, at an elevation of approximately 18 meters above sea level.

Today, Château d'Issan is an active wine estate that continues to produce high-quality wines. It is known for its classification as a Troisième Grand Cru Classé and is managed by the Cruse family.
