The Château d'Onet-le-Château, a historic castle in the French Midi-Pyrénées region, stands prominently in the commune of Onet-le-Château in the Aveyron department. Originally built as a summer residence for the canons of Rodez, who maintained a view of their cathedral from here, it combines a rich history with a strategic location.
History+
The origins of the Château d'Onet-le-Château date back to the 13th century. A legend tells of a dark force that destroyed structures built during the day, culminating in a mysterious fire for which the Girma brothers were executed. In 1292, the monks of Bonnecombe exchanged the property for lands belonging to the Cathedral Chapter. The current building was constructed between 1518 and 1519 on the foundations of the older complex. It served as a summer residence for the canons of the Cathedral Chapter and offered refuge during epidemics. During the French Revolution, the Château was confiscated; its furnishings were auctioned in 1792, and the castle itself was sold in 1796. Since 1810, it has been owned by the municipality of Onet-le-Château.
