Château d'Osthoffen

The origins of Château d'Osthoffen date back to 50 BC, when it was part of the Roman defense system around the camp on Scharrach Hill. The watchtower, from which the castle developed, was located east of the camp, a fact reflected in its Germanized name. In the 12th century, a castle was built on this site, on the foundations of the Roman camp, serving as a defensive structure until the 15th century. After a ten-day siege by the Bishop of Strasbourg, the castle lay in ruins for a century until it was rebuilt by Jost von Seebach at the end of the 15th century. Its function shifted from a military installation to an agricultural and religious center and was later incorporated into Marmoutier Abbey. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle regained military importance. In the early 18th century, it was embellished by the family of Baron von Zuckmantel. During the French Revolution, defensive towers and fortifications were demolished. The Zuckmantel family leased the castle and withdrew. In the 19th century, General François Grouvel acquired the property, and his son Jules Grouvel had the round tower rebuilt and carried out extensive renovations. In World War I, it faced the threat of sale, and in World War II, the castle suffered severe damage and looting.

Château d'Osthoffen is located in Osthoffen in the Bas-Rhin department, which belongs to the Alsace region of France. It stands at an elevation of approximately 164 meters above sea level.

Today, Château d'Osthoffen is privately owned. It consists of two building wings at right angles to each other, featuring a polygonal stair tower from the 15th century and a round corner tower, which is the oldest part of the complex. The tower, rebuilt in the 19th century, replaces the original one destroyed during the French Revolution. A 15th-century statue of Saint Quirin can be seen on the east gable.
