Château d'Ouchy

The Château d'Ouchy is a prominent castle situated on the shores of Lake Geneva in Lausanne, Switzerland. Originally built in the 12th century as an episcopal residence, it now stands as a Neo-Gothic structure that combines a rich history with its modern use as a hotel.
History+
The origins of Château d'Ouchy date back to around 1170, when Landrich von Dornach, Bishop of Lausanne, had a residential tower built on the Ouchy River. After its destruction around 1207 by Count Thomas de Maurienne, the tower was rebuilt under Bishop Roger I. of Vico Pisano. From 1273, it served as an episcopal house and later as a fortified castle. In 1445, local residents were obliged to contribute to the fortifications and found protection there. Following the Bernese conquest of Vaud in 1536, the castle was used as a prison. A fire in 1609 destroyed large parts of the complex, but the central tower remained and served as a granary until 1761. In the late 19th century, from 1885 to 1888, Jean-Jacques Mercier had the ruin demolished to rebuild the castle in Neo-Gothic style as a hotel between 1889 and 1893. The Treaty of Lausanne, which redefined the borders between Greece and Turkey, was signed here in 1923.
